Every IMAX format explained

IMAX is a family of projection systems, not one projector or one screen size.

Judge a room on two axes: what is in the booth, and the physical geometry in front of it. Either can limit the picture.

The decisive question is not “Is it laser?” It is “Which laser, on what screen, showing which master?” A single-projector laser room can be very good while still stopping at 1.90:1.

What each system can deliver

IMAX 70mm film verified

IMAX 15/70 film projection

This is the original large-format IMAX system. Its very large horizontal film frame can supply exceptional detail and a full 1.43:1 image, but the result depends on the negative, printing generation, projector focus, registration, and print condition, so a single digital-equivalent resolution is misleading.

Active: 1970 to present
Maximum frame: 1.43:1
Projection: IMAX rolling-loop 15/70 projectors, principally the GT, GT3D, SR, and MPX families. A film projector advances 70mm print stock horizontally by 15 perforations for each frame.
Light: High-output xenon arc lamp behind a 15/70 film print
Resolution: Photochemical film has no native pixel grid. IMAX currently markets the presentation as 18K, while other published equivalences range down to roughly 12K for a camera negative and lower for a projected release print. None is a direct native-resolution specification.
Sound: The picture print carries no soundtrack. Classic installations used synchronized six-channel sound, first from separate magnetic media and then the IMAX digital sound system introduced in 1988. The laser platform introduced 12-channel sound in 2015, and a film-capable auditorium upgraded to it can use the newer room system for a film engagement.
Published count: 52 film-system locations were actively supported by IMAX at 2025-12-31. IMAX advertised 41 worldwide IMAX 70mm locations for The Odyssey in July 2026, which is a release footprint rather than the complete installed count.

How to identify it: Look for an explicit ticket or venue statement saying 'IMAX 70mm Film' or '15/70'. A 1.43-shaped screen, an IMAX logo, or the words 'Filmed for IMAX' do not prove a film print is being projected. For a specific show, confirm both the 70mm format and that the venue's film projector is operating.

dual-laser IMAX verified

IMAX with Laser, GT configuration

GT Laser is IMAX's flagship digital projection configuration. It is the digital system designed to cover the largest flat screens and can reproduce a 1.43:1 master, with stronger contrast, black level, brightness, and colour capability than the older xenon system.

Active: December 2014 to present
Maximum frame: 1.43:1
Projection: A proprietary dual-projector 4K IMAX laser system developed for Grand Theatre screens. Barco supplied the underlying laser-projection technology, but IMAX does not publish a retail projector model number.
Light: Dual RGB laser projection
Resolution: Two 4K digital projectors. Both images are aligned on the same picture rather than tiled into an 8K raster, so it should be described as dual 4K, not 8K.
Sound: IMAX 12-channel sound. IMAX launched the laser and 12-channel package publicly in 2015, and Avengers: Age of Ultron was the first film remixed for the new layout. The layout adds side and overhead channels to the earlier six-channel system.
Published count: Not separately published. It is included in IMAX's 757 laser-system locations at 2025-12-31.

How to identify it: Confirm that the venue says 'GT Laser', 'Grand Theatre with Laser', 'dual laser', or explicitly promises 1.43:1 digital presentation. The generic public label 'IMAX with Laser' is insufficient because IMAX also uses it for single-projector systems that stop at 1.90:1.

single-laser IMAX verified

IMAX with Laser, commercial multiplex configuration

This 2018 system brought 4K laser projection to ordinary commercial IMAX rooms. It improves contrast, colour, brightness, and resolution over dual-2K xenon, but it cannot project the full 1.43:1 digital frame used by GT Laser.

Maximum frame: 1.90:1
Projection: A proprietary single-projector 4K IMAX laser system designed for commercial multiplex auditoriums. Industry and enthusiast sources call it Commercial Laser or CoLa, but IMAX markets it to customers simply as IMAX with Laser.
Light: Single 4K RGB laser projector
Resolution: Native 4K digital projection from one projector
Sound: Normally paired with the IMAX 12-channel system introduced with IMAX with Laser in 2015. Venue configuration should be checked because the public 'IMAX with Laser' name does not disclose the installed audio layout.
Published count: Not separately published. It is included in IMAX's 757 laser-system locations at 2025-12-31.

How to identify it: If a venue advertises only 'IMAX with Laser', ask whether it has one projector or two and whether it can show 1.43:1. A single projector and a maximum expanded ratio of 1.90:1 identify the commercial configuration. Do not rely on the word 'Laser' alone.

Laser XT reported

IMAX with Laser XT

Laser XT is a lower-cost single-projector member of the IMAX laser family. It retains 4K digital projection but is intended for 1.90:1 rooms and has less consistently documented sound and optical specifications than the commercial CoLa system.

Maximum frame: 1.90:1
Projection: A single-projector 4K IMAX laser configuration. Community technical records associate installations with the Barco SP4K-40B platform, but IMAX has not published a complete model specification.
Light: Single 4K laser projector
Resolution: Native 4K digital projection
Sound: Reported in both six-channel and 12-channel installations. The projector label does not by itself settle the room's audio configuration.
Published count: Not separately published. It is included in IMAX's aggregate laser-system count.

How to identify it: The customer-facing listing will usually say only 'IMAX with Laser'. Reliable identification normally requires a venue technical sheet, a projector-booth disclosure, or confirmation from theatre staff that the system is Laser XT. It has one projector and does not deliver a full 1.43:1 image.

xenon IMAX verified

IMAX Digital xenon projection system

This dual-2K system let IMAX enter conventional multiplexes in 2008. It can be bright and well aligned on an appropriately sized screen, but it has less native detail and a narrower maximum frame than either 15/70 film or GT Laser. Its use on smaller screens prompted the informal and imprecise 'LieMAX' complaint.

Active: 2008 to present
Maximum frame: 1.90:1
Projection: Two modified 2K DLP Cinema projectors. Early systems used Christie CP2000-series hardware, while later installations used Barco 2K platforms after IMAX changed projection partners.
Light: Two xenon arc lamps, one in each digital projector
Resolution: Each projector is 2048 by 1080 pixels. The two images are overlaid with a small alignment offset to reduce visible pixel structure and improve perceived detail, but the result is not a native 4K image.
Sound: The 2008 system was normally paired with IMAX six-channel digital sound. Some rooms later received the 12-channel layout introduced with Laser in 2015, so projector type alone is not conclusive.
Published count: 1,089 xenon-system locations at 2025-12-31. IMAX no longer offers xenon for new signings, and conversions to laser continue.

How to identify it: A listing that says only 'IMAX Digital' and does not say Laser usually indicates xenon. Ask whether the booth has two 2K xenon projectors. A 1.43-shaped screen does not change this system's 1.90 maximum, so expanded scenes will not fill the full height.

IMAX Dome film verified

IMAX Dome 15/70 film projection, formerly OMNIMAX

OMNIMAX was the original brand for IMAX's dome presentation and is now generally called IMAX Dome. It uses the same horizontal 15/70 film transport as flat-screen IMAX, but a fisheye lens and specially prepared image map the frame onto a hemispherical surface.

Active: 1973 to present
Maximum frame: 1.43:1
Projection: A 15/70 rolling-loop film projector fitted with a fisheye lens and positioned to cast the image across a tilted hemispherical screen. The image is optically mapped for the dome rather than projected as an ordinary flat rectangle.
Light: High-output xenon arc lamp behind a 15/70 film print
Resolution: Photochemical 15/70 film with no native pixel grid. Detail on the dome also depends on fisheye mapping, focus over the curved surface, print generation, and viewing position.
Sound: Traditionally synchronized six-channel IMAX sound, digital from 1988 onward. Individual surviving rooms may have received the 12-channel layout introduced in 2015.

How to identify it: The screen curves over and around the audience as a tilted dome, and the venue will usually use 'IMAX Dome' or retain the historic 'OMNIMAX' name. Check the show listing for 'film' or '15/70', because a dome can instead have digital laser projection.

Laser Dome reported

IMAX Laser Dome projection system

Laser Dome adapts IMAX digital laser projection to a curved hemispherical screen. It removes film-print wear and supports digital distribution, but one 4K raster is spread across the much larger surface area of the dome, so pixel density can be visibly lower than on a flat screen.

Maximum frame: 1.43:1
Projection: A single 4K IMAX laser projector with dome-specific optical mapping and a fisheye projection path
Light: Single laser projector
Resolution: 4K at 24 frames per second. A specialist trade report says the system can run 48 frames per second only after dropping to 2K.
Sound: Venue-specific IMAX digital sound, reported in modern installations with either six or 12 channels. No definitive product-wide channel specification was found.

How to identify it: The auditorium has a tilted hemispherical screen and the venue explicitly says 'IMAX Laser Dome' or 'IMAX Dome with Laser'. The word 'Dome' alone is not enough because some domes retain 15/70 film.

What is in the projection booth

Booth arrangements are generated from each system record. Two projectors overlaid on one image do not create a single wider raster.

Film and pixels are different measurements

Digital projectors have a native pixel raster. Photochemical film does not. Its visible detail changes with stock, lenses, focus, laboratory work, print generation, registration, screen, and viewing distance. Treat any film-to-digital “K” figure as an attributed comparison, not a native specification.

Standard 70mm is not IMAX

5-perforation 70mm film projection, not an IMAX system

Standard 5/70 is the familiar roadshow 70mm format used by films such as Lawrence of Arabia and modern 70mm engagements. It is a high-quality large-format film process, but it is not an IMAX projection system and does not produce the tall 1.43:1 IMAX frame. See the frames at the same scale.

What to ask before buying

Check the venue database and check the film. Both answers matter.
